Prince Harry was mid-flow in an impassioned speech about the dangers of AI when the teleprompter in front of him simply gave up.
The Duke of Sussex, 42, was addressing the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting in New York City on Wednesday when the autocue malfunctioned roughly seven minutes into his remarks, according to the Mirror. He had just said the line “We do not have years for what comes next” before trailing off, pausing, then adding a deadpan “And that’s it” and walking off stage, as reported by LADbible.
A spokesman for the duke later confirmed there had been a genuine fault with the teleprompter, which forced him to abandon the speech halfway through.

Harry’s speech, marking two years since he and Meghan Markle launched the Parents’ Network through their Archewell foundation, focused on the risks AI and social media pose to children. He described AI as “the ultimate sycophant”, warning that while “social media learned how to capture our attention, AI is learning how to enter our relationships”, according to quotes carried by both the Mirror and LADbible.
He also spoke personally, saying he came to the stage “as a father” who had spoken to parents who lost children to “recklessly built technology”, and referenced a backdrop of images of children affected by online harm — the same tactic he used in a previous address at the same event two years earlier, per LADbible.

Around 40 minutes later, once the technical issue had been fixed, Harry returned to the stage to finish what he’d started. “Hello again. So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it,” he told the audience, according to LADbible. “Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”
Reports from inside the venue, including one relayed via Yahoo citing PEOPLE magazine, described the audience breaking into laughter and applause both when Harry left the stage and when he returned. In the second half of his speech he touched on legal action against tech firms including Meta and moves in the US to restrict young people’s access to social media, saying “bans, settlements, and payouts are incomplete remedies” because they don’t tackle “dangerous design”, per the Mirror.

The moment quickly went viral, with clips shared widely across social media and picked up by outlets including Page Six and HELLO!. It marked Harry’s first trip back to the US since he and Meghan relocated to the UK, and the appearance drew a large crowd, according to Yahoo’s report citing PEOPLE.
For now, the story stands as an awkward but ultimately good-humoured technical hiccup rather than anything more serious. Harry finished his speech in full once the fault was fixed, and his team have confirmed the teleprompter, not the prince, was to blame.
