Ed Sheeran’s cousin has called him a “lying coward” and claimed he’s witnessed him behaving that way “for almost 10 years” in an extraordinary sit-down with Piers Morgan.
Jethro Sheeran, 44, who performs under the name Alonestar, appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored to air his grievances with the pop megastar, and even broke into a rap verse during the chat. Morgan later branded it “one of the weirdest interviews of my career” on X.
The interview lands amid a torrid few weeks for the Shape of You singer, after his support act Macklemore was dropped from his Loop Tour following comments the rapper made about Gaza. Ed has denied any personal involvement in the decision and says he was “abandoned by friends and family” as the row escalated.
What did Jethro actually say?
Speaking to Morgan, Jethro didn’t hold back. “Seeing what he did to Macklemore, I believe that he kicked him off that show, as I’ve witnessed him being a coward for almost 10 years and lying,” he said, as reported by the Mirror.
He was quick to insist there’s no bad blood driven by envy, though. “He’s very talented and people think I’m jealous, but jealous of what? His looks, his guitar? I mean, I don’t hate him at all. I wish him the best,” Jethro said.
Morgan wasn’t convinced, telling him it “sounds like you really do” hate his cousin, according to Metro.
It’s not the first time Jethro has gone public with his feelings. In a Facebook post shared before the TV interview, he wrote: “Finally it’s all coming out! I’m ashamed of my cousin Ed and what he’s done… he’s not a good person, I don’t like his music so I can’t say he’s even a good artist.” He went on to call him “a bad human” in the same post.
A feud years in the making
Ed and Jethro were reportedly once close, spending school holidays making music together before Ed’s career took off. Their relationship is said to have soured over a 2010 track called Raise Em Up, which Jethro recorded with Ed and which later featured in the 2013 film All Stars.
Jethro reportedly released a remix crediting his cousin and using his image on the artwork, hoping the exposure might help fund the music career of his daughter, Skyla Rain Sheeran. However, lawyers for Ed’s label Warner Music are said to have threatened legal action unless all references to the superstar were removed.
Where things stand now
The public fallout hasn’t stopped there. Ed, 35, has continued with his Loop Tour despite the controversy, breaking down emotionally on stage and telling fans it had been “one of the worst weeks” of his life, adding that “in these situations, you really find out who your friends are.”
His wife Cherry and his parents are said to be standing by him throughout. Meanwhile, further uncertainty surrounds the tour, with TMZ reportedly claiming Ed’s planned show at Gillette Stadium — owned by Robert Kraft, who is said to have rallied other stadium owners over Macklemore’s removal — might not go ahead at all.
Neither Ed nor his representatives have publicly responded to Jethro’s latest comments. The full interview is expected to air on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
