Ben Affleck has revealed that his three kids are not shy about mocking his dating history – and one of them even compared him to a book called I’m Sorry For Everything.
The actor, 54, opened up about his children’s savage sense of humour during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday. Affleck shares Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, and it’s fair to say none of them are asking him for relationship tips.
‘Oh, like you’re the expert?’
Affleck recalled trying to chip in with some fatherly wisdom during a family dinner conversation about relationships. It didn’t go well.
“They’ll talk about their friends and the drama and their relationships,” he explained, according to Yahoo. He said he tried to offer his own “lived experience,” telling his kids: “You know, well, the thing about that relationship there with that person…”
That’s when his 17-year-old cut him off. “The 17-year-old just turns to me and goes, ‘Oh, like you’re the expert on relationships?'” Affleck recalled.
He added that it’s no longer just one eye-roll he has to deal with at the dinner table. “I catch them giving each other looks,” he said, joking that he’s become something of a “caricature” to his kids as they get older.
The bookshop dig that left him ‘proud’
Affleck also shared a story about a trip to the bookshop with one of his children, where a book’s title provided the perfect punchline. “We’re just browsing around and there’s some book by a French guy and it’s called ‘I’m Sorry for Everything,’ and my kid immediately turns to me, deadpan, and goes, ‘Oh, look, Dad, it’s your autobiography,'” he told Kimmel, as reported by Entertainment Weekly and US Magazine.
Rather than being wounded, Affleck said he was actually “proud” of his child’s comic timing.
Affleck has been married and divorced twice. He wed Garner in 2005 before the pair separated a decade later, finalising their divorce in 2018. He later reunited with Jennifer Lopez, whom he’d previously been engaged to in the early 2000s, marrying her in 2022 before the couple split within two years. He’s also previously dated Gwyneth Paltrow and Ana de Armas, among others.
Co-parenting with Garner
Despite the divorce, Affleck has repeatedly spoken warmly about his relationship with Garner, 54, and their approach to co-parenting. He previously told GQ Magazine that Garner is a “wonderful” co-parent, adding: “I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mom, who’s wonderful and great and we work together well,” according to the Mirror.
The pair have also had to manage tabloid speculation together over the years, reportedly telling their children not to believe every supermarket magazine headline about them.
As for his own love life, Affleck hasn’t gone public with a new relationship since his split from Lopez. Model Brooks Nader shut down dating rumours linking her to the actor back in January, commenting on social media that she’d “haven’t met him” in her life.
For now, it seems Affleck’s kids remain his harshest – and funniest – critics.
